What is the Public Sector Data Catalogue?
The Public Sector Data Catalogue is your gateway to discovering and searching Luxembourg's public sector datasets. This national initiative aims to provide you with an overview of all data, both protected and open, held by the public sector in Luxembourg. For protected data, the catalogue contains only metadata, i.e. descriptions of the underlying data. For open data, the catalogue may contain distributions of the dataset in question.
No more endless searches to find out which administration holds which data – the Public Sector Data Catalogue is becoming the cornerstone of a modern, data-driven digital government. This transparency also facilitates innovation by identifying available data and its location, Luxembourg opens the door to new collaborations, research, and innovative services at both national and international level.
If you are a public sector body that holds data, and you want to add metadata to the Public Sector Data Catalogue, see the data inventory page.
What questions can be answered by using the Public Sector Data Catalogue?
The Public Sector Data Catalogue provides transparency on the protected and open datasets that exist within the Luxembourg public sector. A search in the catalogue allows you to understand, among other things:
- which datasets are held by which entity;
- which variables are contained in which dataset;
- information on the possible existence of an authentic source for a specific variable;
- the legal basis governing a dataset;
- the conditions for re-using the dataset.
All descriptions of the datasets contained in the Public Sector Data Catalogue are created using standardised metadata corresponding to the DCAT-AP-LU metadata profile.
How to use the Public Sector Data Catalogue?
To use the Public Sector Data Catalogue, simply go to the catalogue and perform your search.
If your search results do not match your expectations, try broadening your search and checking your filters. If you still cannot find what you are looking for, it may be that the dataset has not yet been catalogued or simply does not exist.
What is the difference between the Public Sector Data Catalogue and the Luxembourg open data catalogue?
data.public.lu is Luxembourg's open data portal. As such, this portal is a catalogue of open data that relates directly or indirectly to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and its territory. However, the entities holding these data sets are not necessarily public sector bodies. Private actors wishing to contribute data sets can therefore do so via this portal. The Luxembourg open data portal meets the requirements of Directive (EU) 2019/1024 on open data and the reuse of public sector information.
The Public Sector Data Catalogue falls within the remit of the Ministry for Digitalisation, instructed by the Luxembourg Government to 'coordinate the establishment of a Public Sector Data Catalogue, including open data'. This catalogue therefore only contains descriptions of open and protected datasets held by Luxembourg public sector bodies.

- identifying and recognising authentic sources;
- helping a re-user find the holder of the data they are looking for;
- the national metadata standard, DCAT-AP-LU.
